Bakwan (Vegetable Fritters)


Serving 6 portions

  • 200 gr All-purpose flour
  • 150 gr shrimp peeled, coarsely chopped
  • 100 gr cabbage, finely sliced or shredded
  • 50 gr beansprout
  • 1 pcs big/ medium carrot, cut into matchsticks or shredded
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 stalk green onion, finely sliced
  • 1 stalk coriander leave (optional)
  • 250 ml cooking oil/ sunflower oil
  • Enough water
  • 3 garlic
  • 5 shallots
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1teaspoon salt


  • Finely chopped or blended using chopper machine or blender garlic and shallots.
  • Mix and stir well, flour, chopped ingredients, egg, vegetables, add water little by little until you get the right consistency (medium thickness dough).
  • Heat cooking oil, take a spoonful of dough, fry until brown on both sides, remove and drain.
  • Serve warm with fresh cayenne pepper or hot sauce or ketchup


  • Do not knead the bakwan dough by hand because the results will be tough, use a spatula.
  • Use the non-stick frying pan.
  • If you do not like vegetables, you can change the main ingredient with prawns, sweet corn, bacon, or sausages.
  • This kind of snack very best pairing with cola, tea, or coffee. It could be a hot appitezer too.
