Bosnian Ćepavi, a dish for sausage fans

Ćepavi is considered by many a Bosnian dish, but it can also be found in other countries for the Balkans.

Ćepavi are addictive mini sausages served in a special Bosnian pita bread called Somun. We tried this recipe at home and it’s amazing! Here’s how you do it…

Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef
  • 500g ground lamb
  • 2 slices day-old white bread (cut off crust, soak in water, squeeze out excess water)
  • 1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 – 1 1/2 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 20g butter
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2-3 pinches sweet paprika (1 tablespoon)
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • Parsley, finely minced
  • 6-8 pita breads

 

Preparation

  1. Soak bread in water then squeeze dry.
  2. Combine beef and lamb in a large bowl with onion, garlic, butter, bread, egg, paprika, salt, pepper and parsley.
  3. Mix well, making sure all ingredients are well dispersed.
  4. Shape into sausages the size of a thumb and grill over medium heat until browned and cooked through.
  5. To serve, cut the pita breads in half, and open the bread to make a pocket.
  6. You can add a few finely sliced onions inside the pita.
